National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”
The Department of Physical Education at KhPI was established in 1950. For many decades, it has stood as a premier department in Ukraine, possessing deep-rooted traditions of mass sports and physical fitness programming for both students and employees. The department’s evolution was heavily accelerated by the opening of the “Physical Education” specialty (currently “Physical Culture and Sports”) in 1994, operating at the intersection of sports, information technologies, and management. A unique material infrastructure for physical culture, sports, and recreation was built on the foundation of the department. For many years, the NTU “KhPI” Sports Complex served as a fundamental base for academic classes and student self-realization; it was awarded the State Prize in Architecture and held the official status of an Olympic Preparation Base for the national teams of Ukraine.
The department cultivated more than 20 sports disciplines, including: aerobics, armwrestling, badminton, basketball, freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, sambo, weightlifting, water polo, volleyball, kettlebell lifting, judo, track and field, powerlifting, underwater sports, swimming, climbing, tennis, table tennis, tourism, football, checkers, and chess. Training sessions are led by genuine experts in physical education, sports, and recreation, including renowned specialists, Honored Coaches of Ukraine, and national team coaches.
National championships, international competitions, tournaments, and dual meets were regularly hosted here. This vibrant environment facilitated the preparation of champions of Ukraine, Europe, and the World, Olympic contestants, Honored Coaches of Ukraine, Honored Masters of Sports, and Masters of Sports of International Class.
A phenomenal record in the history of Ukrainian collegiate sports is the fact that NTU “KhPI” won the All-Ukrainian Universiades six consecutive times between 2001 and 2019. Another unique athletic tradition of NTU “KhPI” is its comprehensive KhPI Spartakiad, which ran for 70 consecutive years across various sports (encompassing up to 25 sports in its peak years), drawing thousands of participating students annually.
Distinguished Alumni of NTU “KhPI” Include:
Oleksiy Barkalov: Two-time Olympic Champion (1972, 1980) and Silver Medalist (1968) in water polo;
Oleksandr Serdiuk: Bronze Medalist of the Olympic Games in archery (2004);
Yana Dementieva: Olympic Champion in rowing (2012);
Olena Voronina: Silver Medalist of the Olympic Games in sabre fencing (2016);
Andriy Zhyltsov: Winner and medalist of the Paralympic Games in track and field (2004);
Ihor Nimchenko: Two-time medalist of the Paralympic Games in swimming (2024).
Thus, prior to the full-scale invasion, NTU “KhPI” was an undisputed leader in Ukrainian student sports.
Regrettably, in June 2022, following a missile strike, the NTU “KhPI” Sports Complex was severely damaged and partially ruined. The track and field arena, the indoor game hall (which hosted basketball, volleyball, and badminton classes), and the climbing wall were completely destroyed. The table tennis hall, swimming pool, tennis courts, football field, and other recreational spaces sustained significant damage. Through the dedicated efforts of the university, the swimming pool, table tennis hall, and wellness physical culture rooms have been successfully repaired and put back into operation.
Currently, NTU “KhPI” students continue their training and preparation for national and international competitions in disciplines such as armwrestling, badminton, basketball, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, water polo, swimming, table tennis, climbing, track and field, powerlifting, and martial arts. As long as there are students eager to pursue sports and represent our university on national and international athletic arenas, we will do everything to restore our material base, rebuild the sports complex, revive all our athletic traditions, and reclaim our spot as a premier sports leader among higher education institutions in Ukraine.
