The Department of Physical Education and Sports of Ternopil National Ivan Puluj Technical University was established in 1962. The first Head of the Department was Candidate of Historical Sciences Bohdan Yevstakhovych Trofymyak, who led the department until 1970. Subsequent heads of the department included: Borys Mykolaiovych Shirinskyi (from 1970 to 1982); Borys Oleksandrovych Martynchuk (from 1982 to 2001); and Andriy Mykhailovych Teplyi (from 2001 to 2010).

Today, the Department of Physical Education and Sports is housed within the modern, newly constructed facilities of the “Polytechnic” Sports and Wellness Complex. The complex features:

A sports hall equipped with spectator grandstands for 300 seats;

A gymnastics and weight-training gym;

An aerobics and fitness hall;

A European-standard swimming pool with spectator grandstands for 150 seats;

A state-of-the-art conference hall equipped with internet access.

Currently, under the leadership of Yaroslav Vitaliyovych Kurko (Candidate of Sciences, Elite/Highest Category Swimming Coach), the department employs 5 highly qualified lecturers, 3 coaches, 1 laboratory assistant, and 1 physician.

The department cultivates 5 sports disciplines (swimming, volleyball, table tennis, kettlebell lifting, and armwrestling) engaging 220 students. Each discipline features dedicated university varsity teams that participate in competitions of various ranks.

Furthermore, 24 rehabilitation groups operate within the swimming pool, where students and staff members improve their health in an aquatic environment. Participants receive professional consultations regarding a healthy lifestyle, dietary nutrition, and health rehabilitation utilizing therapeutic physical exercises, self-massage, and related practices.
