Dnipro State Technical University

Dniprobudivs'ka St, 2, Kamianske, Dnipropetrovs'ka oblast, Ukraine, 51900

In 1962, following the transition of the evening metallurgical institute to a full-time day status, physical education classes were integrated into the curriculum. Academic sessions were initially conducted by part-time lecturers: L.V. Bulhakov, V.V. Kamyshov, and L.R. Yezhevskyi.

Due to the growing student population, a subject commission for physical education was established in 1965 with three full-time faculty members, chaired by V.V. Kamyshev.

During the 1966 academic year, the Department of Physical Education was officially approved, comprising 6 lecturers and headed by Department Chair V.I. Horb. The leadership history of the Department of Physical Education includes: 1966–1981 – V.I. Horb; 1981–1989 – Candidate of Technical Sciences (PhD) V.M. Pchelov; 1989–1992 – V.V. Yakushenko; 1992–2004 – T.D. Chumakova; and from 2004 to the present – Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences (PhD) O.H. Hladoshchuk.

As student enrollment continued to rise, the department’s teaching staff expanded to 9 members by 1971.

In 1967, at the initiative of the department and with the endorsement of the university administration, construction began on a sports and wellness camp in the Tsarychanka District along the Orel River. The sports and wellness camp was repeatedly recognized as one of the finest in the region. During the summer season, the camp provided recreation and health-improvement opportunities for 300 to 450 students and lecturers of the institute. Since 2018, the sports camp has operated under a “Practicum Camp” model. Ecology students complete their field placement here, and since 2022, they have been joined by higher education students majoring in specialty 017 Physical Culture and Sports. The camp hosts competitions in association football, volleyball, cross-country running, and orienteering.

In 1976, by decision of the city executive committee, the 10,000-seat “Burevisnyk” Stadium was transferred to the university’s balance sheet and placed at the disposal of the department. The stadium features a standard association football pitch, track and field lanes, a calisthenics (workout) complex, and an administrative facility. The stadium hosts university-level and municipal competitions in football and track and field events, alongside academic training sessions and recreational physical activities for students.

Throughout the establishment and operation of the department, optimal conditions and support have been provided to enable the university’s students to achieve high athletic results:
