Drohobych Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University
Athletic Life and the History of Sports Development at DSPU
The history of the Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University of Drohobych began on April 15, 1940, when, in accordance with Resolution No. 461 of the Council of People’s Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR, the Drohobych Teachers’ Institute was established with faculties of history, geography, and language and literature.
The development of athletic activity at the institute is closely tied to the establishment and operation of the Faculty of Physical Education, which traces its origins back to 1957, following the reorganization of the Boryslav Medical School (Decree of September 3, 1957, No. 198). However, this faculty existed for only two years before being transferred to the Kremenets Pedagogical Institute.
In 1996, a Physical Education division was opened at the Ivan Franko State Pedagogical Institute of Drohobych (Decree of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine No. 1572, September 1996), and on December 10, 1997, by Decree No. 438 of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, it became the Faculty of Physical Education. From that moment, the Faculty of Physical Education turned into a powerful center for sports development, not only within the university but also in the city of Drohobych and the entire region. In 2022, as a result of structural changes at the university, the Faculty of Physical Education was reorganized into the Faculty of Human Health and Natural Sciences.
Students and alumni of DSPU are participants in the Olympic Games, the Universiade, and the World Games, repeatedly emerging as champions and medalists at World Championships and Cups, European Championships, and Ukrainian Championships. Exceptionally significant results have been achieved in the following sports: cycling, kickboxing, track and field, horting, sports acrobatics, futsal, powerlifting, weightlifting, association football, tennis, hand-to-hand combat, and wushu.
During the operational period of the Faculty of Physical Education at Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University of Drohobych, the following have been trained:
3 Honored Masters of Sports of Ukraine—Yaroslav Popovych (cycling), Sviatoslav Hasiuk (kickboxing), and Mykhailo Zvarych (futsal);

Throughout its journey of formation and development, the university and its Faculty of Physical Education became a powerhouse for training highly qualified personnel in the field of physical culture, alongside being a renowned and leading hub of sports in the region.
Our university was a constant participant in the “Universiade” competitions for higher education institutions of the III-V accreditation levels, which was conducted annually under the auspices of the Committee for Physical Education and Sports of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in the Lviv Region (up until 2019). The results of these athletic activities are highlighted in local and regional mass media, and relevant information is consistently published on the official websites of Ivan Franko DSPU and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
