Ivan Franko National University of Lviv

The Department of Physical Education and Sports of the University operates 19 sports performance enhancement groups across 17 sports disciplines. A total of 335 students train within these sports performance enhancement groups, categorized as follows:

Masters of Sports of Ukraine – 8 individuals (Judo – 2; Orienteering – 1; Sambo – 1; Chess – 1; Badminton – 1; Rowing – 1; Track and Field – 1);

Candidates for Master of Sports – 15 individuals;

Rated athletes (mass participation ranks) – 133 individuals;

Non-rated athletes – 178 individuals.

The university actively participates in all-Ukrainian student sports projects, notably the “Side by Side” (Plich-o-plich) Student League. Students of our university are active participants in sports life at global, European, all-Ukrainian, and local levels. Members of the University varsity teams in chess, judo, and sambo have emerged as champions and medalists at world and European tournaments. The University’s Chess School is well-renowned across Ukraine and has nurtured many famous chess players (such as A. Volokitin and N. Buksa).

The varsity badminton team has repeatedly secured podium finishes at the Universiades of Ukraine. Today, badminton is developing dynamically at the university; the institution hosts the “University Badminton League,” which unites students and staff members from various faculties. Furthermore, the University varsity teams in basketball, football, and futsal consistently secure top rankings in municipal and regional leagues, demonstrating a supreme standard of preparation.
