Odesa National Technological University

Kanatna St, 112, Odesa, Odes'ka oblast, Ukraine, 65000

Athletic life at Odesa National Technology University is an integral part of the educational process and possesses deep historical traditions that shape a culture of healthy living, physical improvement, and student team synergy. Management of these activities is spearheaded by the Department of Physical Culture, Sports, and Military Preparation, which integrates educational, training, and competitive workflows. The university has established a robust material-sports base, including a sports complex with a swimming pool, team-sport courts, and specialized gyms, allowing for the advancement of various sports and the training of elite athletes.

A crucial feature is the blending of mass participation sports with professional achievements. The university regularly hosts traditional sports events that have become a staple of student life: the “Freshman Futsal Cup,” the “907 Meters” track and field relay, the “Health Track” run, the “From Dawn to Dusk” football marathon, a 24-hour swimming pool relay, physical activity festivals, tourism rallies, and spartakiads. These events build cohesion within the student body, foster leadership qualities, and popularize physical culture.

ONTU students actively enter competitions at various tiers—ranging from municipal and all-Ukrainian to international tournaments. They consistently secure podium finishes in track and field, martial arts, orienteering, and team sports, showcasing a superb level of preparation. A significant portion of education seekers hold official sports ranks or titles of Masters of Sports of Ukraine, and routinely contest in European and World Championships.

A distinct page of the university’s sports history belongs to the Records of Ukraine set by its representatives. Notably, during the traditional football marathon “From Dawn to Dusk,” a Record of Ukraine was set for the longest continuous football match, becoming a symbol of the endurance, team spirit, and athletic enthusiasm of the students.

Another vital direction in developing student sports is the operation of the “SALO” (Most Active People of Odesa / Sami Aktyvni Liudy Odesy) Tourism Club, which has been functioning since 2009 and unites students interested in sports tourism, active recreation, and travel. Club members regularly embark on hiking, mountaineering, and skiing expeditions, and organize training runs and field training camps. The club shapes its own traditions, including the annual “Tourist of the Year” award established in 2013 to honor the most active participants of the tourism movement.

Thus, the university’s athletic life merges traditional sports, record-breaking milestones, and active tourism, generating a comprehensive framework for the physical development of students where everyone can find an avenue for self-realization—from participating in mass events to setting national records.
