Sports Life at the Academician Yuriy Bugay International Scientific and Technical University (ISTU)

Sports play an important role in student life at the Academician Yuriy Bugay International Scientific and Technical University (ISTU), contributing to the development of teamwork, leadership, responsibility, and healthy lifestyles. The University views sport not only as a form of physical activity but also as a platform for personal development, mutual support, communication, and community building. According to the University’s official resources, sport is an integral part of student life, with students encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities, including football, basketball, volleyball, meditation and yoga, tennis, step aerobics, and CrossFit.

ISTU’s modern sports infrastructure includes volleyball, basketball, and football clubs, an outdoor sports ground, an indoor sports hall, a football field with a specialized playing surface, as well as facilities for chess, table tennis, and esports using virtual reality technologies. This approach combines traditional team sports with innovative forms of physical activity that reflect the interests of today’s students.

An important part of the University’s sporting tradition is the organization of competitions and tournaments that unite students around the values of fair play, mutual respect, and teamwork. One notable example is the Volodymyr Starodubov Memorial Sports Tournament, which features competitions in futsal, basketball, and volleyball. Beyond determining the winners, the tournament serves to preserve the memory of Volodymyr Starodubov, strengthen the unity of the university community, and promote an active and healthy lifestyle.

The Professional College of ISTU also places significant emphasis on sports development. The College offers the educational programme in Specialty 017 “Physical Culture and Sports”, where students study the theory and methodology of physical education, sports and recreational games, gymnastics, athletics, sports management, the organization of sports events, and the fundamentals of physical rehabilitation.

The College has a modern 300 m² outdoor sports ground, a 92 m² multifunctional indoor sports hall for table tennis, chess, and draughts, while athletics training is conducted at the Desnianskyi Central Stadium.

Sports activities at the College involve broad student participation. In 2024, all first-year student groups participated in the annual freshmen’s sports competition, including six men’s teams and five women’s teams, representing the largest number of participants in the history of the event. The programme included team presentations, relay races, sports challenges, and tug-of-war competitions.

In 2026, the College hosted a 3×3 basketball tournament involving six student teams representing various academic disciplines, highlighting the interdisciplinary and inclusive nature of ISTU’s sports community. College students also participate in city-level competitions, including table tennis championships among Kyiv institutions of professional pre-higher education.

Historically, ISTU has developed strong sporting traditions, particularly in volleyball. The MNTU-Naftogaz Kyiv women’s volleyball team won the Ukrainian Lower League Championship during the 2000/01 season. In the 2002/03 season, the team competed in the Ukrainian Women’s Super League, finishing 4th out of eight teams in the final standings.

Between 2000 and 2003, the University’s Super League volleyball team was coached by renowned Ukrainian volleyball coaches Henrikh Hnatiuk and Volodymyr Podkopaiev. The club was also an important stage in the career of Ukrainian volleyball player Olena Ustymenko, who played for MNTU-Naftogaz Kyiv during the 2002–2003 seasons.
