The History of Sport at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv

The history of sport at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is almost as old as the history of the University itself. It did not begin with stadiums and sports complexes, but with the understanding that the harmonious development of an individual is impossible without physical development. That is why the history of university sport is a story of perseverance, enthusiasm, and the consistent cultivation of a culture of a healthy lifestyle that has continued for more than a century.

In the mid-nineteenth century, physical education had not yet become a component of university education. Students could only study dancing, fencing, and horse riding, which were regarded as essential elements of a well-rounded education. However, by the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as sport began gaining popularity across Europe, these new trends gradually reached the University.

One of the key advocates for the development of physical education was Professor Mykola Obolonskyi of the Faculty of Medicine. He persistently convinced the University administration of the need to introduce physical exercise for students. After several years of dedicated efforts, his initiative was supported, giving rise to the idea of establishing a dedicated gymnasium and developing the University’s sports infrastructure.

A new stage began in 1905 with the establishment of the “Circle of Physical Exercise Enthusiasts.” Later, in 1909, the “Sports Club of Students of Saint Volodymyr University” was founded, becoming a true centre for the development of university sport.

Its members practised:

  • Gymnastics
  • Fencing
  • Track and field athletics
  • Weightlifting
  • Football
  • Hockey
  • Rowing
  • Skiing
  • Speed skating

They also took part in sports festivals, lectures, and the first university competitions. It was at that time that the belief emerged that sport was an important component of student life and the university community.

Establishing a Strong Sporting Tradition

In the 1930s, physical education became a compulsory part of the educational process, and in the 1933–1934 academic year, the Department of Physical Education began its work at the University. This marked the beginning of systematic sports activities: sections in various sports were established, the number of students involved in training increased, and university athletes increasingly represented the institution at Ukrainian and Soviet competitions.

Already in the post-war years, thousands of students participated in sports sections, and Kyiv State University became one of the leading centres of student sport in Ukraine.

Even the Second World War did not interrupt this tradition. After the restoration of the University’s activities in 1944, the work of the Department of Physical Education and the Sports Club was resumed alongside the educational process. The reconstruction of sports infrastructure, the opening of new sections, and the expansion of material facilities became symbols of the return to full-fledged university life.

Modern Sports Infrastructure

The following decades became a period of rapid development.

In 1958, the “Mriya” Sports and Recreation Camp began its operation and remains an important place for recreation and sports improvement for university students.

In the early 1970s, a modern sports complex featuring a swimming pool, specialised halls, and outdoor sports grounds was opened. This significantly expanded opportunities for training and athlete development, making the University’s sports facilities among the best at higher education institutions in Ukraine.

Today, sport at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv represents a combination of long-standing traditions and modern approaches to physical education.

Despite the educational and sports complex being damaged by a Russian missile strike at the end of 2022 and currently requiring restoration, sporting activities have continued uninterrupted. Training and physical education classes are held at:

  • the stadium of the University’s sports complex;
  • the sports halls of the Institute of Geology;
  • the sports halls of the Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations.
