State University of Trade and Economics

Kioto St, 19, Kyiv, Ukraine, 02156

Since the 2000s, a distinct contribution to ushering in a new era of university development, particularly within the sports sector, has been made by Rector Anatoliy Antonovych Mazaraki—a renowned scientist, academician, and educational leader. Under his stewardship, the educational institution transformed into a modern European university that dedicates substantial attention to the advancement of physical culture, a healthy lifestyle, and university sports. It was precisely through Mazaraki’s initiative that the operations of the sports club were revitalized, sports halls modernized, new sections opened, and, most importantly, a comprehensive system of sports and mentoring work was forged, aimed at supporting youth and unlocking their full potential.

Today, numerous active sports clubs operate within the university, encompassing association football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, boxing, wrestling, tennis, chess, cheerleading, track and field, tourism, water sports, badminton, and tug-of-war. Students regularly participate in the Spartakiads, the “Commonwealth Games” among intramural faculty teams, the “MEN’s POWER” strength competitions, and tournaments held in memory of prominent coaches and lecturers. Participation in such events reinforces team spirit and renders the university a true community of individuals striving for success.

Under the leadership of Anatoliy Mazaraki, the university has not only modernized its educational process but has also paid significant attention to developing its athletic infrastructure—modern sports complexes, fitness gyms, outdoor courts, and active recreation zones have become the pride of the campus. Sports at SUTE are not merely leisure, but an integral component of the educational process, helping to cultivate leaders capable of teamwork, self-discipline, and the attainment of top-tier results.

The university takes great pride in its athletes—winners of municipal, all-Ukrainian, and international competitions. Among the student body are champions in various disciplines of track and field, volleyball, basketball, and table tennis. The university’s varsity teams have repeatedly secured podium finishes in competitions among higher education institutions in Kyiv and have actively participated in national tournaments.

A distinct branch of the university’s athletic life is represented by its separate structural units—the Chernivtsi and Uzhhorod Institutes of Trade and Economics, where individual sports clubs operate to sustain the traditions of active youth. These institutes organize their own competitions in tourism, fitness, and track and field.

In summary, the athletic history of the State University of Trade and Economics is a narrative of continuous development, innovation, and accountability toward the youth. Thanks to the strategic vision and pedagogical approach of Rector Anatoliy Mazaraki, the university has succeeded in creating an environment where sports are not just a part of the curriculum, but a way of life. This environment shapes a new generation of specialists—healthy, active, and goal-oriented citizens of Ukraine for whom sports and education are equivalent components of success.
