Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University
The department was founded in 1946, one year after the establishment of the Stanyslaviv Medical Institute. In 1948, it was designated as an independent course in physical education, sports, and therapeutic physical culture. Throughout its history, the department has undergone numerous reorganizations and name changes. Today, it is known as the Department of Physical Education, Sports Medicine, and Ergotherapy (Occupational Therapy).
IFNMU is renowned for its rich athletic traditions and outstanding athletes. The men’s volleyball team emerged as champions of the Ukrainian SSR Spartakiad (1966), the women’s basketball team secured bronze medals, and the football team claimed the Ukrainian SSR Spartakiad championship (1989) as well as the USSR Championship among medical higher education institutions (1990). In 2012, the university’s varsity team won second place in the overall team standings at the national championship for Ukrainian medical universities held in Alushta.
Currently, the department fosters and develops the following sports disciplines: chess, basketball, volleyball, association football, table tennis, arm wrestling, kettlebell lifting, badminton, aerobics, swimming, tennis, track and field, judo, karate, and boxing.
