Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University

Sports life and traditions at Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University (CNUVS, formerly Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University (PNU) until its renaming in 2025) are an integral part of the University’s corporate culture, which is based on the harmonious combination of academic education, national and patriotic values, and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. Thanks to its strong scientific and methodological foundation and the active engagement of its students, the University confidently maintains a leading position in student sport not only in Ivano-Frankivsk but also at the national and international levels.
The primary objective of the University units responsible for the development of physical education and sport is to create favourable conditions for the comprehensive development, health promotion, and realisation of the sporting potential of students. This objective is achieved through the coordinated work of the University’s key sport-related academic and organisational units, including the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport, the “Nauka” Sports Club, the Department of Sports Pedagogy, the Department of Theory and Methods of Physical Education and Sport, and the Department of Physical Education. The effectiveness of physical education classes and sports training is supported by the University’s well-developed sports infrastructure, which includes the following facilities:
“Nauka” Stadium, where athletics and football classes and training sessions are held, as well as large-scale student sporting events;
“Olymp” Sports Complex, featuring:
a multi-purpose sports hall for basketball, volleyball, badminton and futsal;
a gymnastics hall for aerobics and fitness;
a martial arts hall for judo and self-defence training;
a dedicated training hall of the Vasyl Fedoryshyn Wrestling Academy, used for training high-performance athletes;
Sports Hall No. 1 in the University’s main academic building, used for volleyball and badminton classes and training;
a strength training gym located in Student Residence Hall No. 1, equipped with modern exercise machines for kettlebell lifting, other strength sports, and recreational physical activities for students.
The University serves as a training base for athletes competing at the highest national and international levels. Main achievements. Basketball: the women’s team of BC “Frankivsk-CNUVS” – silver medallists of the 2026 Ukrainian Basketball Championship; second place at the 2025 FIBA 3×3 World Cup in China; first place in the 2025/2026 Youth EuroLeague; second place at the 2025 FISU 3×3 World University Championship in Brazil.
Canoeing: Iryna Fedoriv and Liudmyla Luzan became World Champions in the C-2 500 m event. In 2026, Iryna Fedoriv won third place at the Canoe Sprint World Cup in Szeged, Hungary.
Mixed Martial Arts: Denys Koziora became the 2026 European MMA Champion in Belgrade (Serbia) and the silver medallist of the 2025 World Championship in Tbilisi.
Freestyle Wrestling: the team of the Vasyl Fedoryshyn Wrestling Academy won the 2026 Ukrainian Freestyle Wrestling Cup for the third consecutive time; gold medals – Kemil Karimov, Ihor Nykyforuk; silver medals – Roman Hutsuliak, Artem Tisnohuz; bronze medals – Yaroslav Hurskyi, Andrii Dzhelep, Vadym Tanasiychuk. Viktoriia Piatnychuk, a first-year student of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport, won the gold medal at the 2025 WTKA Kickboxing Championship in Italy.
Taekwondo: bronze medallist of the 2026 Ukrainian WTF Taekwondo Championship – Marharyta Krainova.
Boxing: 2026 Ukrainian Boxing Cup (Lviv) – silver medallist Mariia Manziuk and bronze medallist Bozhena Melnyk.
Winners of the regional stage of the “Side by Side Student League” 2026: futsal (men’s), basketball (women’s), volleyball (women’s), volleyball (men’s) teams.
The cheerleading team will participate in the final stage in Kyiv.
Mass student sport and recreation. Physical education and sport at CNUVS are available not only to professional athletes but also to all students. A particularly important role in these processes is played by the University-wide Department of Physical Education and the “Nauka” Sports Club. They are responsible for involving students of all faculties in regular physical education and sports activities. Thanks to this synergy, we are able to monitor the physical condition of almost 100% of first- and second-year students. The annual Universiade is regularly held, and this year it is taking place for the 21st time, featuring competitions in seven sports: athletics triathlon, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, futsal, chess, and tug of war. Mass events – the University-wide Health Day Run is held regularly. Sports events marking the International Day of University Sport are organised by the “Nauka” Sports Club together with the municipal centre “Sport for All”. The “Nauka” Sports Club participates in organising championships of the Ivano-Frankivsk Professional College of CNUVS in volleyball, futsal, 3×3 basketball, badminton, and arm wrestling.
Sports clubs: sports groups operate in Pilates, fitness, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, aerobics, strength training, badminton, cheerleading, kettlebell lifting, athletics, darts, chess, and self-defence.
Charity volleyball and futsal tournaments in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (Student Trade Union Committee), as well as volleyball, badminton, and futsal tournaments in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine among University staff (the “Nauka” Sports Club and the Staff Trade Union Committee), have been held.
The interaction between the University’s units is reinforced by its strong scientific school: modern sport is impossible without professional medical and biological support. In this context, we have a unique synergy with the University’s medical field. The Department of Therapy, Rehabilitation and Morphology conducts fundamental research into the morpho-functional characteristics of athletes, studying how the human body adapts to critical physical loads. At the same time, the Department of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy acts as the main developer of innovative programmes for restoring motor functions. Researchers from these departments monitor the health status of students, combining medical theory with the practice of high-performance sport. Sporting achievements are based on a strong scientific school, and the results of this work were presented at the 2nd All-Ukrainian Scientific Conference “Physical Education in Educational Institutions: Current State and Development Prospects”, held in Ivano-Frankivsk on 22–24 May 2026.
Scientific research is carried out under the topic “Study of the Patterns of Development of Team Sports in the Carpathian Region and the Implementation of the Results into Practice.” Student science is actively developing: annual reporting conferences are held where students present their own research in the field of sports training. We are developing inclusion by implementing corrective and preventive technologies for students with musculoskeletal disorders.
Challenges and Problems. Cooperation with rehabilitation centres for the recovery of veterans and athletes through the Department of Physical Therapy needs to be expanded. Due to the deterioration of the infrastructure, there is a need for further modernisation of the stadium and sports halls equipment. To improve funding, it is necessary to attract grants and investments for the purchase of modern equipment.
Prospects and Strategic Goals.
Digitalisation: Integration of modern platforms for monitoring students’ physical activity. The need for broader implementation of digitalised sports modules in distance or blended learning.
Partnership: Expansion of cooperation with the leading sports higher education institutions of Ukraine (Ivan Boberskyi Lviv State University of Physical Culture and others).
Dual Education: Development of individual study schedules for active professional athletes.
Promotion: Active career guidance and attracting prospective students through events such as Stefanyk Open Day.
