National University of Physical Education and Sport of Ukraine

Fizkul'tury St, 1, Kyiv, Ukraine, 02000

The National University of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine (NUPESU) has for recent decades remained the primary stronghold of Olympic education and athletic mastery in the nation, shaping a unique socio-cultural space where academic traditions and elite athletic achievements seamlessly converge. Athletic life at the university is not merely an educational curriculum, but an uninterrupted, dynamic system encompassing the development of elite-level sports, mass student leisure, and contemporary, socially vital domains such as adaptive and veteran sports.

The bedrock of the university’s renown lies in its prominent alumni, whose names are inscribed in golden letters into the history of world sports. Over many years, the university has nurtured athletes who become Olympic champions, as well as medalists at World and European Championships. Among these legendary figures are Zhan Beleniuk, Denys Berinchyk, Liudmyla Luzan, Nataliya Dobrynska, Inessa Kravets, and numerous other masters who have demonstrated the prowess of the Ukrainian athletic school to the entire world. This continuity of generations fosters a distinctive institutional spirit, where every student feels a profound connection to grand victories and has living examples of professionalism right before their eyes.

Student sports at NUPESU serve as the foundation for training the reserve pool of national varsity teams. The university boasts a powerful material and technical infrastructure, enabling the advancement of dozens of sports disciplines—ranging from classical Olympic events to modern non-Olympic trends. The institution operates numerous sports clubs and sections where youth refine their technique, build leadership qualities, and cultivate team spirit. A particular point of pride is the university’s varsity teams in volleyball (men’s and women’s) and the men’s basketball team, which compete in the Championship of Ukraine, underscoring the exceptional standard of student preparation and the athletic authority of NUPESU.

The regular participation of students in Universiades and international student games confirms their high level of preparation, while traditional intramural championships and tournaments become true celebrations of athletic excellence. The university successfully implements a comprehensive suite of measures aimed at refining the physical education process for higher education students, developing university sports, and upgrading the material and technical base. To engage youth in an active lifestyle, regular spartakiads and tournaments are conducted at both intramural and intercollegiate levels. The university has repaired and upgraded sports inventory and equipment, modernized training curricula, and expanded the selection of available sports clubs, thereby enhancing both the health indicators and athletic mastery of its students.

A prominent place within the university’s structure is held by the “”Olympic Style”” sports complex, which provides facilities for educational and training sessions, group and individual physical culture classes, as well as other athletic and wellness events. Currently, the university is undergoing systemic modernization by upgrading its infrastructure, implementing advanced information technologies, utilizing a modular learning environment, and developing a robust scientific and methodological support framework for the educational process.

In total, representatives across 71 sports disciplines pursue their education at the university, including 43 Olympic and 28 non-Olympic sports. Despite the challenging wartime conditions, in 2025, students competed in tournaments, championships, and cups at all-Ukrainian, European, and world levels, demonstrating a supreme standard of preparation. The university facilitates the dual career pathway by allowing students to combine education and athletic careers through individual academic schedules provided in accordance with the Regulations.

The enhancement of athletic mastery is safeguarded by the work of 25 faculty members across 16 sports disciplines who hold the highest coaching category; among them are 16 Honored Coaches of Ukraine, 4 Honored Masters of Sports of Ukraine, and 5 Masters of Sports of International Class. Thanks to their dedication, the university’s students have clinched prestigious accolades. In 2025, 168 higher education students were selected for the national varsity teams of Ukraine (up from 135 in 2024), over 197 became champions and medalists at Ukrainian Championships and Cups, and more than 99 represented the country at World and European Championships, World Universiades, and the Deaflympics. In total, the university’s students secured 119 medals of various calibers at international competitions in 2025.

The advancement of adaptive sports occupies a special place within the university’s structure. Recognizing the paramount importance of inclusion and social integration for individuals with disabilities, NUPESU became a pioneer in implementing methodologies for physical rehabilitation and sports tailored for persons with special needs. This approach enables Ukrainian athletes with disabilities to consistently claim top positions on the international stage.

In recent years, the domain of veteran sports has become exceptionally relevant. The university actively participates in the processes of physical culture and sports rehabilitation for war veterans, creating optimal conditions for their return to an active life. Athletic initiatives for veterans are designed not only to restore physical fitness but also to provide psychological decompression and socialization.

The athletic traditions of the university are rooted in the fundamental principles of Olympism—mutual respect, fair play, and the pursuit of excellence. The annual celebrations of the Day of Physical Culture and Sports, the organization of scientific and practical conferences addressing the issues of elite-level high-performance sports, and active engagement with the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine highlight the role of NUPESU as the intellectual and athletic epicenter of the country.
